Kinneret Lake basin

Description
Name:Sea of Galilee Drainage Basin
Year:1999-2001

The Sea of Galilee, is Israel's largest freshwater lake and the main source for drinking water. The lake has a total area of 166km², and catchment area of 2,730km2.

Identification and quantification of pollution sources in the Sea of Galilee drainage basin (for the Water Commissioner):

The aim of this project was to set up a decision support system for managing water pollutants into the Sea of Galilee drainage basin. DHV MED identified the pollution sources in the drainage basin area and built a decision support system for the development of the drainage basin and its influence on the transportability of pollutants to the lake.

The system is based on a Geographical Information System (GIS), and includes models for determining pollution levels and analyzing the influence of sources on concentrations of pollutants that reach the Sea of Galilee.

The model that was developed is a decision support tool that enables the examination of various conditions in the basin, including an examination of the impact of local developments (roads, gas stations, grazing areas etc) and scenarios of arid, average, and rainy years.
